Directs and evaluates the technical and professional operations of the Clinical Cytogenetics and Molecular Departments. The Scientific Director successfully signs out clinical cytogenetic cases and works with employees and Lab Managers to ensure adherence to all procedures necessary for operation, and provides guidance and support required by employees to solve problems and to accomplish objectives for the department.  Works collaboratively and in conjunction with the Prenatal Department, Pediatric Genetics Department, Oncology Department, and other departments and clients that submit specimens for Cytogenetics evaluation.

 

Legacy Laboratory Services is an independent reference laboratory offering extensive medical testing services in the region and connectivity solutions for both laboratory information systems and electronic medical records. This role is located at the Holladay Park Campus in Portland, Oregon.

Responsibilities

Technical, regulatory and operational knowledge of procedures and equipment is maintained to keep the department current and productive.

 

Shares expertise and knowledge with other departments, staff and managers.

Develops programs that update staff and maintain current levels of practice.

Seeks input from peers, staff and supervisors to coordinate efforts toward improved patient service.

Enhances knowledge and skills to maintain a level of technical ability to guide and assist the department.

Assures compliance of the Cytogenetics and Molecular Departments with regulations and codes required by College of American Pathologist (CAP) and other regulatory groups as related to this technical area.

Consults with medical supervision or attending physician staff members to identify cytogenetic and Molecular tests considered necessary to aid in the diagnosis of patient illness or disorder. In this role, participates in medical rounds with attending physicians to provide technical information on cytogenetic procedures applicable to individual patient cases.

Analyzes requests for cytogenetic and Molecular tests and determines what specific equipment, reagents, media, and other materials and supplies will be used in the performance of individual test procedures.

Establishes the scope and nature of the quality control procedure necessary to assure the accuracy and reliability of test results, and continually monitors the performance of such procedures to assure their effectiveness.

Maintains CAP, CLIA, ISO certifications.

Provides technical supervision to technologists, monitors the performance of test procedures, and communicates the interpretation and evaluation of preliminary findings to referring physicians.

Designs and directs the development of cytogenetic and Molecular tests, the system of methodology to be used in the performance of such tests, and the streamlining of existing test procedures.

Plans, develops, and conducts lectures and demonstrations on the principles of cytogenetics and their application in a clinical laboratory for Medical Technologists, Cytogenetics Technologists, Technologist Trainees, Pathology Residents, and other medical staff members.

Keeps professional innovations up-to-date.

Qualifications

Education:

A Doctoral degree in Cytogenetics or related field from an accredited college. Related fields are: Microbiology, Biology, Pathology, or Biochemistry.

 

Experience:

Six years of clinical experience in cytogenetics in an approved clinical laboratory. Prior experience in cancer testing and molecular genetics preferred.

 

Certification/Licensure:

American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) Certified in Clinical Cytogenetics, American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) Certified in Molecular Genetics, or 

American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) Ph.D. Medical Genetics required; two or more preferred.

 

Skills:

  • Knowledge and ability to successfully sign out clinical cytogenetic cases.
  • Knowledge and ability to successfully guide the selection of equipment, technology, and test validation.
  • Ability to motivate staff, communicate effectively, manage the appropriate technology, and strategically plan for organizational change.
  • Organizational skills to function independently and to work closely with others using a team approach.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Quality Improvement tools and techniques to apply towards improving customer satisfaction and service quality.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands and to respond rapidly to changing priorities.
  • Knowledge of current and future developments and trends in healthcare and areas of defined accountability.
