Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel is a regional center for the care of infants, children and teens. We offer unrivaled pediatric expertise in a state-of-the-art facility designed exclusively for children. From routine care to the most complex cases, pediatricians and families trust us to provide the most advanced medical and surgical care for kids.
Child Life Specialists provide general social and emotional support to pediatric patients and their families during their inpatient hospital stay. Specifically trained in the developmental needs of infants – adolescents, Child Life Specialists provide on-going opportunities for play, diversional activities, self-expression, and interaction with other hospitalized patients. Through the specific use of medical play, patients are pre-operatively prepared for surgery and are offered procedural support for tests and medical procedures. Program goals are to provide positive, developmentally supportive experiences, which assist patients in reducing fear and anxiety associated with hospitalization. Child Life Specialists are also involved in training Child Life Interns, pediatric volunteers, and nursing staff in the social, emotional, and cognitive needs of pediatric patients.
This position primarily covers the Children's Emergency Department and is responsible for responding to needs throughout Randall Children's Hospital on evenings and weekends.
The hours of this position are 1:00pm-11:30pm and every other weekend.
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Child Development or a related field required.
Experience: Child Life Internship (600 hours) or previous employment as a Child Life Specialist for a minimum of 600 hours required. Previous work/volunteer experience with children (0-21 years) in non-medical settings helpful, i.e. schools, early intervention, day care, youth camps, adolescent programs, etc.
