Overview

Your attention to detail will leave a lasting impression on patients, visitors and staff. As you maintain the cleanliness and safety of rooms, patient care areas, offices, hallways and other assigned areas, you will set the tone for a healthcare environment that seeks to make life better for patients, the community and each other.

 

Performs a variety of service related activities in support of the Patient Transportation Program.  Duties may include the daily upkeep and maintenance of unit, supplies, patient transportation, patient lifts and other patient care activities. May relieve transportation dispatcher during breaks/lunch and APL days.

Emanuel Medical Center is a Level 1 Trauma Center, Regional Burn Center and serves the needs of both adult hospital population as well as Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel.

Responsibilities

Performs general transportation of patients to ancillary departments.

Assists with patient care including, but not limited to the following: lifting/turning patients, orientation of the patient to the room controls, preparing the room for new admits, transporting patient belongings.

Records in the patient’s medical chart the date, time, destination, mode of transportation, and Patient Transportation Associate signature.

Obtains assurance from the RN that the patient is stable enough to transport.

Understands age-related needs.

Offers assistance to patients, families and visitors while respecting patient privacy and confidentiality.

 

Monitors equipment inventory, provides preventative maintenance, and completes work order forms for broken equipment (excludes biomedical equipment).

Completely understands and properly utilizes all features of support equipment.

Recognizes malfunctions of all equipment and performs basic troubleshooting repairs.

Maintains thorough familiarization with service areas at all campuses served by the dispatch center.

May operate E-chart and transportation computer to print face sheets, print patient assignment sheets and dispatch PSAs assigned to transportation.

Completely understands and properly utilizes all features of the Comm.-Center radio and telephone equipment and equipment updates as they are installed.

 

Performs routine inspections of products, equipment, and sanitation standards to assure quality.

Works in a safe manner and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

Participates in process improvement activities.

Reports needed repairs or potential hazards to the appropriate department as soon as identified.

Takes the initiative to identify and solve problems using the CQI process.

Supports improvement and innovation in the workplace.

 

Records of events and information resources are documented and maintained for Transportation Service.

As events occur, accurately, completely, uniformly, and legibly records all aspects of service requests on the appropriate documents.

Knows the information available and proper locations of resource material.

Accurately performs general upkeep of resource materials by adding/deleting information as it becomes available and maintaining the files in their appropriate order and places.

 

Utilizes available resources appropriately.

Communication equipment and Campus mapping resources are utilized for processing and dissemination of requests for Patient Transportation.

Utilizes hospital documents, personnel trauma system and support agencies for assistance and resources for Patient Transportation service

Understands the support services provided by, and the proper way to contact, relevant hospital departments.

 

Written and verbal communication is clear and appropriate.

Works with all departments and units to provide coordinated, effective service.

Makes all contacts in a style that reflects cooperative task accomplishment and maintains a good rapport with co-workers.

Communicates with manager regarding problems.

Promotes an effective communication network among all staff.

Takes the initiative to identify and solve problems within the department.

Organizes and prioritizes daily workload and manages time to maximize efficiency.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or the equivalent, preferred. Medical terminology helpful but not required. Reading and writing skills at 10th grade level.  Basic math skills and good verbal communication skills. Detail oriented.
