Responsibilities

The Director of Risk Management is responsible for leading system-wide risk management initiatives across our multi-hospital system. This position plays a pivotal role in the culture of safety, excellence in healthcare delivery, and systematic risk mitigation. The Director oversees the Risk Management, Patient Relations and Regulatory Readiness programs, ensuring alignment with healthcare industry standards, organizational goals, and compliance with federal and state healthcare regulations related to patient safety and quality of care.

 

The Director also oversees professional and general liability claims in collaboration with the organization’s third-party administrator (TPA), ensuring timely reporting, thorough investigation, and timely submission of claims. This includes analyzing trends, coordinating with legal counsel, and implementing strategies to reduce liability exposure while supporting a culture of safety and accountability.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, or related field required; Advanced degree (e.g. Master’s in health care, business, or a related field) strongly preferred

 

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience, including leadership, of experience in healthcare risk management and regulatory readiness.
  • Advanced knowledge of risk management principles and practices, including regulatory requirements, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Demonstrated competency in maintaining excellent relationships with stakeholders such as executive leadership, department heads, and bedside care workers to align efforts with organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, developing, and implementing risk management programs in a healthcare system and hospital setting.
  • Experienced with high-stakes conflict resolution and crucial conversations.

 

Skills:

  • Works in close collaboration with Legal and Corporate Compliance to:
    • Develop and implement policies and procedures that promote a just culture within the broader culture of safety framework.
    • Ensure confidentiality and appropriate handling of sensitive information in accordance with legal and regulatory standards.
    • Collaborate effectively with departments and stakeholders across the organization to support enterprise-wide goals and initiatives.
    • Demonstrate advanced skills in leadership, management, presentation, facilitation, organizational development, consultation, and training.
    • Communicate clearly and persuasively, including the ability to engage in crucial conversations with staff, patients, and external regulatory agencies.
  • The Director provides oversight of the Patient Relations team and the organization’s grievance process to ensure timely, thorough, and compassionate responses to patient complaints and grievances. This includes:
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements,
    • Participate in hospital-based grievance
    • Coordinate appropriate and timely responses to complaints and inquiries submitted by insurance payors.
  • The Director ensures that all concerns are addressed in a manner that supports patient satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Possesses critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work independently and in partnership with others.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate complex situations and make informed decisions.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills, capable of leading engaging work product on complex subjects.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise risk management principles and practices within healthcare.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with diverse teams, motivate and mentor, and build consensus.

Licensure

  • Certification in risk management (CPHRM) required.

Pay Range

USD $71.12 - USD $107.38 /Hr.
