Overview

As an Associate Safety/Security Officer, you will help to provide that sense of safety within the boundaries of Legacy Health; extend courteous assistance as an informational resource; and ensure the security of buildings, equipment and other assets located on our property. You may also be required to observe behavioral health patients or staff a desk position. Responsibilities

The Safety/Security Officer II Canine Handler is a key component of hospital and healthcare security, tasked with safeguarding patients, staff, visitors, and critical assets by employing a highly trained canine for detection, deterrence, and emergency response along with all duties expected of a Security Officer II and taking overall responsibility of the assigned Security Working Canine (SWC) in accordance with departmental policy and procedures.

 

In a healthcare setting, the officer’s responsibilities extend beyond traditional security to include the protection of sensitive medical environments and maintaining a secure atmosphere conducive to patient care. This role requires extensive experience in healthcare security protocols, SWC handling, emergency response, and a strong understanding of the unique challenges posed by hospital and clinical environments.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Satisfactorily complete an LHS approved SWC Handler Academy.
  • Associate’s degree/college level coursework in professionally related fields such as criminal justice, social work, psychology, or any social science preferred.
  • The education requirements for DPSST certification may be different from Legacy's education requirements for this job.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum two years prior Corrections, Military, First Responder (law enforcement, fire services, EMS), or comparable Security experience; OR, one year of Legacy Health Officer experience.
  • 2 years of professional SWC. Handling experience preferred.
  • Minimum two years’ experience with heavy public contact and an emphasis on customer service required and de-escalation training preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office applications

  • Ability to safely operate a Legacy provided vehicle.
  • Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision, exercising independent judgment within stated guidelines.
  • Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions.
  • Willingness to follow Legacy policies/procedures as well as guidance from Safety/Security Manager and Director.
  • Ability to respond to potentially violent confrontations while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
  • Demonstrates a customer service focus and puts patients and their families at the center of all work activities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with staff, management, physicians, visitors and the public.
  • Ability to move quickly after periods of inactivity to periods of crisis and/or emergency. This includes the ability to run, climb stairs, lift and restrain person(s) as necessary.
  • Strong understanding of SWC behavior and training methods in a healthcare context.
  • High level of emotional fitness and integrity.
  • Knowledgeable in interpreting laws, ordinances, policies, and procedures.
  • Able to integrate SWC-assisted detection into broader security systems to enhance safety measures.
  • Able to perform demanding physical tasks, including rapid response to emergencies, navigating hospital facilities, and managing the SWC in various settings.

Licensure

Licensure/Certification:

  • Current valid applicable state driver’s license and a driving record that meets insurance carrier requirements.
  • Healthcare Provider BLS or AHA Heartsaver CPR including Adult, Child, and Infant with AED certification required within 14 days of placement.
  • Successful completion of Legacy’s approved de-escalation training certification within 120 days of the first day of placement within the department and then recertification as defined by the course.
  • Successful completion of Legacy Health’s Safety and Security’s physical control program.
  • DPSST (Department of Public Safety Standards and Training) unarmed professional temporary certification (PS 20) or current DPSST unarmed professional certification required within 14 days of placement. The DPSST unarmed professional certification must be obtained within 120 days of the first day of placement in the department.
  • Required within 120 days of hire Legacy approved SWC handler certification.

Pay Range

USD $26.59 - USD $38.01 /Hr.
