Overview

The VP of Philanthropy works under the direction of the SVP, Chief Nursing & Philanthropy Officer, to lead a comprehensive fund development program for Legacy Health and its six hospitals, clinics, programs, and services. The VP is responsible for establishing fund development efforts as high-performance best practice programs. This role works collaboratively with volunteer community leaders, as well as Legacy Senior Management and medical leadership, to develop and advance the vision and strategic pathways of the hospitals and community. The VP clearly reports on initiatives and progress to Foundation trustees, other community stakeholders, and Legacy Senior Management. 

 

This position is responsible for creating a standardized approach to all aspects of fundraising, including major and principal gifts, as well as regional annual and mid-level fundraising efforts. The VP leads the development and management of the financial, operational, and administrative systems infrastructure for Philanthropy. Responsibilities include providing vision and leadership for a highly effective internal customer service environment, while implementing and overseeing programs to build and steward Legacy’s base of donors and provide the support necessary to enhance and facilitate Legacy’s major gift efforts. 

Responsibilities

  • Staff management, including recruiting, mentoring, and directing the development of staff. Set performance standards and measures, provide appropriate levels of training, mentoring and professional development, and foster a strong sense of teamwork and cross-functional communication and collaboration among direct reports, the development staff and with other groups within Legacy Health. 
  • Serves as spokesperson for Philanthropy and for the roll-out of all new, philanthropy-related programs. Develops and presents new initiatives in a manner that establishes internal ‘buy-in’ from stakeholders and includes information such as timelines, costs, and projected benefits, etc.  
  • Works collaboratively with SVP Chief Nursing & Philanthropy Officer, executive directors, and VP, Marketing & Communications to provide support, as appropriate, for various activities and initiatives 
  • Oversees the development and implementation of all data and reporting functions as they relate to prospect tracking and research, gift entry and fundraising activity.  
  • Evaluates vendors and services, to support fundraising functions. 
  • Develops new and innovative approaches to broad based fundraising.  
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of annual giving programs, including direct mail, events, and employee giving campaigns and makes recommendations for changes as needed to increase donor acquisition and retention to achieve appropriate fundraising ROI. 
  • Leads the development and monitoring of Philanthropy operating budgets and annual performance metrics. 
  • Manages the development and/or review of Legacy Health policies related to philanthropy. 
  • Maintains knowledge of IRS regulations related to fundraising and oversees initiatives to ensure Legacy’s compliance. 
  • Represents Legacy to the business community to promote Legacy Health medical centers and programs and services as recipient for philanthropic contributions. 

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum 10-15 years of fundraising experience, with at least five years of progressively responsible fundraising leadership and management.
  • Demonstrated success in soliciting gifts of $25,000 or more and management of campaigns that have raised $10 million+.
  • Knowledge of (and preferably experience in) a full range of healthcare fund development programs and procedures, including:
    • Major gifts
    • Annual gifts
    • Planned gifts
    • Prospect research
    • Stewardship
    • Donor recognition
    • Communications
    • Grants
    • Direct mail
    • Events

 

Skills:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • High-level understanding of development principles and how development databases support fundraising.
  • Knowledge of gift processing, constituent data, and prospect tracking protocol and systems.
  • Knowledge of Blackbaud CRM or similar database system.
  • Knowledge of fundraising accounting standards and IRS tax-deductibility rules governing charitable giving.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Experience managing complex budgets.

Licensure

  • CFRE preferred
