Overview

As a Pharmacy Intern, your compassion for others is felt in simple ways that make a huge impact: spending time to explain a medication, asking how a patient is feeling, checking with pharamcists and other health care providers to make sure patient pharmacy care is running smoothly. Your concern for patients helps to fulfill the Legacy mission of making life better for others.

Responsibilities

The pharmacy intern is responsible for the safe and appropriate use of medications through the provision of comprehensive pharmaceutical care, under direct supervision of a pharmacist.

 

CLINICAL COMPETENCE:

  • The pharmacy intern will demonstrate knowledge of clinical pharmacy and apply this knowledge in performing clinical activities.
  • All clinical activities will be performed under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and as appropriate to the intern’s level of education and experience. 
  • Clinical activities include those described in the staff pharmacist’s job description.

WORK FLOW/PRODUCTIVITY:

  • Accurate, efficient quality medication-related care is ensured by utilization of positive management techniques in supervision coordination and assignment of appropriate personnel.
  • Responsible for completion of all assigned work procedures during the shift.
  • Regularly assists pharmacists and pharmacy technicians as time allows and as requested.
  • Responds to changes in work load as necessary. Uses time in productive manner - assists technicians & other pharmacists, restocks, cleans, orders, organizes, special projects, etc.

COMMUNICATION:

  • Appropriate information, oral or written, is effectively transmitted or received to enhance communication with customers.
  • Enhances workflow through effective, open and respectful communication.
  • Establishes and maintains open communication channels.
  • Demonstrates good listening skills.
  • Maintains work effectiveness with timely flow of information.
  • Maintains strong rapport with health care practitioners.
  • Demonstrates appropriate telephone and other communication skills.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCE:

  • Quality medication-related care is ensured by accurate and efficient distributive services.
  • Responsible for all product preparation in assigned areas under the direct supervision of a pharmacist (e.g. compounding, IV admixture, first doses, and central fill)
  • Responsible for accurate and efficient use of pharmacy computer systems.
  • Filling outpatient prescriptions as required.
  • Pharmacy out date checks.
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy equipment.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital, departmental and regulatory policies and procedures.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

  • Pharmacy knowledge and skills are updated, shared and applied continuously to improve quality of pharmaceutical care.
  • Attends pharmacy related educational opportunities at their site of practice.
  • Provide inservice education for hospital staff as assigned.
  • Prepares P&T formulary monographs and educates pharmacy staff on new drug therapy as assigned.

SAFETY AND SECURITY:

  • Patient, personnel, department and facility safety and security is ensured by knowledge and application of established policies and procedures, safety, security and emergency plans.
  • Maintains accurate inventory and records on controlled substances as required by law.
  • Participates in and demonstrates knowledge of required safety, security and emergency programs required by department or hospital.
  • Maintains clean, safe, and orderly environment.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Currently enrolled student of accredited School of Pharmacy

Licensure

  • Current applicable state Pharmacy Intern License required.

Pay Range

USD $33.50 - USD $33.50 /Hr.
